After a long hearing in front of Lambeth’s licensing subcommittee which ended at 11.15pm, Gareth Hughes finally secured another premises licence for Lock and Load Events Ltd in respect of their annual dance event on Clapham Common. The event is one of the dance event highlights in the UK and is known all over the world, featuring many of the world’s premier DJ’s.
This year the application was opposed by a local resident who instructed David Matthias QC. The latter argued excessive sound levels causing a nuisance and that there was no power in Lambeth to grant a premises licence, as a prior authority from the Secretary of State had not been granted to the local authority to permit events on the Common. Gareth argued against both submissions and was successful before the committee. He also secured later hours and an extra day for this iconic event, which occurs every August Bank Holiday weekend.
The event has much support in the local community with over 150 local residents expressing how much they approved the event and wanting sound levels increased.
Gareth said – “I am delighted that once again we have successfully resisted a concerted attack by a small group of local residents who attempt every year to stop this iconic event from going ahead. Once again they have failed and in so doing have allowed the organisers of the event to secure longer hours and an extra day over the Bank Holiday weekend. We wish the organisers every success with the 2016 event”
