Gareth Hughes was delighted to assist our client and US luxury hotel entrepreneur, Michael Achenbaum, overcome the final hurdle in securing permission for a major hotel and members’ club development, called The Curtain, in Shoreditch. Gareth secured the outcome before Hackney Council’s licensing committee which handed down its decision in favour of the £70m project on Curtain Road, on 17 February 2016.
The development consists of a 120 room hotel, a private members’ club, a conference level ballroom, a ground floor bar and a large rooftop pool area. Three star New York Times chef Marcus Samuelsson has already been signed to open a restaurant in the hotel.
Mr Achenbaum is responsible for the exclusive Gansevoort Meatpacking and Gansevoort Park Avenue hotels in New York. This will be their first members’ club.
Mr Achenbaum commented:
“This has been the culmination of many years of work and we are overjoyed to have finally been given the go-ahead. We have worked closely with residents and Shoreditch stakeholders to make sure that they share our vision for a cutting edge space.
“We want to make this project something that not only Shoreditch but also London as a whole can be proud of.”
“Over the last year we have taken on board the concerns expressed and have incorporated crucial amendments to the original plans. We are confident that these targeted changes will ensure the long term success of the space.
“A licensing application for a project of this size has to be managed from all angles and we are delighted to have reached this stage.
“We would like to thank residents, the police and other stakeholders for engaging with us so positively to date, and we will continue to do so as the project comes to fruition.”
